Tim Challies reflects on the the extraordinary value of women (part 1 and part 2).
He rightly points out that submission in marriage is a beautiful picture of the relationships within the Trinity. One who has an ugly perception of submission does not grasp the beautiful picture of submission painted in Scripture by the Son submitting to the Father. Submission has nothing to do with inherent worth - it’s a functional role. Americans, in particular, are handicapped in understanding this issue as we are proud about not “bending the knee” so-to-speak to anyone.
Thank you Lord for Debbie … who, through the years, I have come to grasp is much more valuable to Your kingdom than I.

The “worth vs. role”
The “worth vs. role” dialogue is a biblical, freeing conversation. Though Jesus was co-eternal and co-equal with the Father, Jesus was never to be the Father. Jesus was never to be the head - at least not over the Father. This does not diminish Jesus at all. Neither does it lift the Father higher than Jesus or the Holy Spirit.
And note, these roles (within the Godhead) were not created so that we would understand ourselves. We were created according to the eternal, unchanging character of the Trinity.
With that said, men and women are co-equal in Sojourn. Men and women can possess any of the gifts, but not all roles. The only role that a lady cannot obtain is “elder.” This is akin to a lady being able to be a mother, but not a father. Elders are the male leaders that govern/lead the congregation. Ladies may be servant leaders (aka. deacons/deaconness), teachers and other many other leadership roles.
It excites me to see ladies use their gifts and abilities for the glory of God. That is part of the reason you will regularly see ladies take part in the leadership of worship gatherings and Journey Groups.
