"emerging" too far

Check out the Christian Nudist Convocation - a “movement of God calling believers all around the world to fellowship, greater effectiveness in representing Christ to Nudists (a subgroup often spurned by most Christians), and representing biblical truth regarding our bodies to non-nudist Christians.”

Before I offer a theological critique, anyone interested in defending this as a legitimate expression of the church?

Ahem.

I’m not going to offer a very spirited defense, because I don’t really know what to think about this.

I will note that to my very rudimentary understanding of nudism, it’s supposed to be asexual. Therefore, whereas I can’t imagine any way that people could possible gather in the buff without inciting a lot of lust, I think a nudist would argue that it’s not about that at all.

Now, I’m not sure that I find the hardcore nudist view very wise or mature. (In other words, Mr. Nudist, it may well be that you personally aren’t tempted by lust but you should still be sensitive to the temptation you may be creating for others – maybe even others who claim to be as untempted as you.) But I can see how outreaching to people who think like this without compounding the temptation or possible folly is quite a challenge. I’m not sure whether going around nude is inherently a sin or whether it just requires a lot more judgment not to induce us weaker brothers and sisters to sin. I tend to think the latter.

OK, back to the puns… :)

Near as I can tell from their website (and the website that gives them advertising support) - they’re not trying to come up with Biblical reasons why nudity is something they should do, all they’re saying is that there’s no Biblical support for saying it’s wrong. (I’m not saying anything about the validity of either position at this point.)

In looking at my own reactions to this, I find that I have a tendency to want to tell these people to grow up, put on their big girl underpants, and get with the program. What’s odd is that I don’t think I would have the same reaction to tribes in Africa that already don’t wear clothes.

Not sure if these are analogous at all, just noting oddities in myself.
