I was touched by this story that I heard on NPR this morning. It’s about a guy, Julio Diaz, who was mugged by a teenager with a knife as he got off a subway in New York City. The events that happen afterwards were inspirational.
I recommend listening to the story instead of reading it. Click “Listen Now” near the top of the NPR page to hear Diaz tell the story:

Teaser:
Diaz replied, “Well, haven’t you been taught you should be nice to everybody?”
“Yea, but I didn’t think people actually behaved that way,” the teen said.

As the teen began to walk
As the teen began to walk away, Diaz told him, “Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something. If you’re going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm.”
That’s a great story. I
That’s a great story. I wonder if the kid had ever been asked before what he wanted to do with his life.

Mr. Diaz has an amazing
Mr. Diaz has an amazing story. In the face of someone threatening real physical deadly violence he kept his cool enough to reason with his aggressor. Instead of fleeing and assuming that someone he had just mugged would be trying to trick him, the aggressor listened to the reasoning, and agreed to have dinner with Mr. Diaz. During dinner the perfect scenario happened to introduce the point that Mr. Diaz is nice to everyone (dishwasher, manager, and servers all walk by and say hello). Either the scenario was divine providence by God or Mr. Diaz fabricated it in his mind. I’m genuinely willing to believe either option. I would be interested to know whether workers at the diner corroborate the story.
