Depressing Books are Fun! Or, why I once found myself reading "Lolita"

written by pwc_readsalot on 01 May.

Bringing my oldest son home from the hospital was the beginning of a big lifestyle change for me. I went from teaching History to 10th and 11th graders as well as coaching volleyball to sitting around at home while my baby seemingly slept all the time. After a few weeks I felt like my brain was turning to mush. So, I got on the Internet and downloaded Harvard’s Top 100 Books list as well as the Modern Libraries list and a couple others. I dusted off my library card and got busy. And thus began some of the most depressing reading of my life. After suffering through some of those lists (I’m still working on them) I started thinking about what the best Christian books would be. Unfortunately it’s a little tougher to google a list for that.

So would anyone like to take a stab at it? Instead of the best 100 Christian theology books maybe you could come up with the 10 best Christian theology books. It might give some of us out there that aren’t well read in Christian theology a starting point. And it would be interesting to see where people ranked what books. I know I am way behind on my reading and I’d love to see what other people thought was most important to be reading.

“Don’t Waste Your Life” by John Piper was a lifechanging book that helped me view the Christian life in a wonderful new way. If you like it, you will want to get deeper by reading another book of his called “Desiring God”.

You are talking about one of my passions. I particularly love walking with avid readers and throwing books at them. I will give a list later.

Good blog Paula… I am addicted to books.

There are many sites that that offer “free” books… if you like reading on the computer. I always print them out and bind them. Anyway…. Amy suggested two AMAZING books that are life changers.

Desiring God - John Piper

Don’t Waste Your Life - John Piper

Monergism - Free Books - There are many “Old School”, Puritan writers in this list.

Octavious Winslow is a must… PERSONAL DECLENSION & REVIVAL OF RELIGION IN THE SOUL is a must!!!

Cross of Christ - John Stott - I am reading this now and it is an amazing book!!!

Mark Driscoll’s books are good reads… Vintage Jesus was just released.

Tim Keller’s book “Reasons for God” just came out and is New York Times best seller.

There are many more… I will post as time permits. Now go read!!!
