This weekend is the FREE Monte Sano Art Show! Over 150 visual artists will exhibit their work at Monte Sano State Park and give opportunity to purchase the art as well. When you visit, don’t forget to look for Jeff White’s booth where he’ll feature some of his excellent photography!

The show will open to the public at 9 a.m. and will also feature great festival food and four musical groups, including the ever-popular Rhythm For the Savage Masses percussionists, who will perform from 3 p.m. until close.

Please plan to visit the show and when you are finished browsing the art booths hike the beautiful Land Trust trails surrounding the state park.

Hope to see you on the mountain!

God the Physicist and Artist28May

Check out the following video. Salt is poured on a vibrating table. At certain frequencies the salt gathers into interesting patterns. Someone should take some of the shots and Photoshop them. Would make some good art.

God is the author of math, physics, art, and beauty. It should not surprise us to see the beauty within each of these disciplines. Further, it is amazing when those fields overlap.

If you search Youtube for cymatics you come up with some other interesting films. Cornstarch and water is another good medium.

“God, you amaze me.”

Tape Sculpture08May

Check out these Tape Sculptures done by Mark Jenkins. The public telephone is a personal favorite.

Art is both expression and creation. Actually, it should be called “co-creation” because (1) we cannot create anything and (2) God is the one that gives all artists the ability to express and make. Co-creation is a reflection of God’s character. It is a part of the Imago Dei (we are made in “image of God”). As you look at art look for expression of the human condition. See if there is desire for freedom, or apathetic posture, or a proclamation of redemption. Take the story of the Gospel to it. See how Jesus’ story affirms, challenges or finishes the story.

Peace.

The following interview is copied from Tim Challies Blog It is his interview with Makoto Fujimura, who is a Japanese-American Artist and a Christ Follower.

A little while ago I conducted a brief interview with Makoto Fujimura (makotofujimura.com). Fujimura is a New York-based artist who deals with a kind of art with which I have little familiarity. I first heard of him through an article written by Phil Ryken in which he describes visiting an exhibition featuring Fujimura’s work. I was intrigued by the examples of his art I saw through the internet and asked if he’d be willing to answer a few questions. He was kind enough to comply.

When did you first discover your love for art? Did you receive any formal artistic education? Who are your greatest influences in your art?

Or those, like me, who wish they could write but don’t have anything salient to write about. ;)

I’m trying to go regularly to Monkey Speak, the Flying Monkey’s monthly open mic for writers. It’s each first Friday night, so that means this coming Friday December 7. Anyone want to join me?

Hello True Believers,

Attention artists, photographers, and Photoshop junkies. We are looking for art and photos that represent journeying.

We’d also like to gather more cool Huntsville photos. I’d particularly like to see some shots of downtown life.

Burn a CD and get it to me, or email (no more than 2mb per email) files to . We cannot promise to use them, but we will look through them.
