Michael Patton nails some of his own theses into his blog door, proclaiming the rise of “Historical Evangelicalism”. He makes valid points about the trivializing of the term “evangelical”, as well as the emerging church.

The term “evangelical” ceases to have meaning when the likes of John Piper and Wayne Grudem can be classified as “evangelical” along with such people as Benny Hinn and Joel Osteen. And while agreeing with much of their (the emerging church’s) assessment of the current situation of the day, he also rightly bemoans “a root of bitterness that is causing it to submerge into the depths of obscurity and irreverence.”

Many people in the blog world and those who were there are saying this message is a ’Historic Event’. Some have even likened it to Martin Luther nailing the 95 theses on the door at Wittenberg Chapel. David and I witnessed this first hand… I was a powerful message where Mark drew a very clear line in the sand. It is worth your time to listen.

Before I offer a theological critique, anyone interested in defending this as a legitimate expression of the church?

The St. Louis Dispatch reports on increasing enmity from parts of the SBC towards the emerging church, especially Acts 29. What’s interesting is that the leader of this battle on the SBC side is not even a pastor, but someone whose “influence comes from his knowledge of the way the Missouri Baptist Convention is set up.” Hmmm. It’s also noteworthy that the enmity seems to be one-way.

This is priceless. I’m thinking maybe a mohawk for me …
