“An 8-million-year-old bacterium that was extracted from the oldest known ice on Earth is now growing in a laboratory, claim researchers.” (http://environment.newscientist.com/article/dn12433-eightmillionyearold-bug-is-alive-and-growing.html)

Scientists in Antarctica dug up DNA and bacteria from a glacier. The samples were from 3-5 meters below the surface. They unearthed a certain bacteria and found that it would double about every seven days. The bacteria is declared to be harmless.

Sometimes it’s very difficult to make sense of suffering and tradegy - i.e., the recent school bus accident here in Huntsville where several students lost their lives. This seemingly senseless tragedy reminded me another tragedy I had seen depicted in the powerful movie “To End All Wars” (http://www.toendallwarsmovie.com/).

If you have not seen this movie, get the DVD. It is the true story of four Allied POWs who endure harsh treatment at the hands of their Japanese captors during World War II while being forced to build a railroad through the Burmese jungle, and ultimately find true freedom by forgiving their enemies. Caution: this movie is not for children. Rated R for language and intense scenes of suffering.

My heart broke when I heard the news. A psychopath entered a one-room, Amish school in Pennsylvania. He sent boys and adults outside, opened fire on the girls and then killed himself. The story only got darker as I read about his haunted memories of molesting girls 20 years ago, coupled with the devices he brought with him in the schoolroom. Thankfully, he did not use any of them.

During this siege, the man’s wife was in a prayer meeting that she led. I assume it was a Christian group she was leading. He called and spoke to her during this living nightmare. Ten girls were shot. Five have died to date.
